I believe I understand your problem. You mentioned a mere 25 min flight, and that you noted a time of 3:55pm. For your location, even the dimming of a partial eclipse near the edge of the band of totality had already passed shortly before you began. Simply put, you missed it altogether.
In my childhood, some 60 years ago, I experienced such a partial eclipse. I built a special pinhole viewer box from cardboard and a paper screen, and excitedly watched as the reflected image of the sun became partially eclipsed and then restored to its fullness; and I watched as the neighborhood around me passed through a few minutes of eerie twilight and back. In those days, there was no access to inexpensive filter glasses through which to safely observe the sun’s disk directly.
