is there a way to reset the altimeter readout on the controller to zero before takeoff, so I can see AGL altitude?

Yes, when you arm the throttle it is set to AGL.
Mine reads 1785 when I arm it. And that’s not even accurate. 1734 would be a good MSL reading. Is there a way to set it to ZERO?
