I just recently purchased the ‘quick release prop hub’ from ePPG for this Kangook SP140. Unfortunately, it doesn’t fit with the Kangook prop spacer-thingy that moves the prop further away from the motor.
Does anyone know the purpose of this Thingy™? The prop seems to fit fine without it, but I’m sure Kangook added it for a reason.
Maybe the propeller bends too closely to the frame under load?
I’ve reached out to Kangook to see if they can shed some light. Unfortunately, it seems that this means the current Quick Release Prop Hub design won’t work for this setup.
I was able to get ahold of Kangook. They confirmed that the spacer was added due to stress put on the cage during an aggressive takeoff run while leaning over. This can cause the cage to flex slightly due to the pressure the lines apply to the cage, potentially interfering with the propeller. Additionally, under power, the prop flex could be “up to 1 inch”.
I have the Kangook frame and use it with prop quick release. Indeed the prop does flex and will touch the cage on full power takeoff run. On static it takes full power and still clears the cage by 2cm or so but I guess bouncing on the back makes it flex more..
I ordered a 22mm nylon bar and made spacers about 20mm long to move the motor and ESC further out from the cage. Cabling of the ESC is also now less tight. Seems to work, have now about 20 flights with this setup.
Like I wrote, I made them from a nylon bar that I got from Amazon. Just cut them to a length and drill a hole.. This way I could test different lengths etc but the extra 20mm or so was ok. Note that the total length of the new spacer is around 30mm, not 20mm as I wrote earlier.
I was so used to easiness with the quick release that receiving the Kangook frame with a spacer was a bummer.. Did not understand or ask about it before. Moving the motor a bit solved the issue.
I bought the Amaruk XD. Its is heavier but sturdier and packs easier / faster to the car.
