DIY Carbon fiber hoops

I had a close call so no more off back or unsecured starts for me.
Cheers

I like the design… triangles decrease weight and maintain strength. It is my understanding, however, that in most cases, holes do not improve aerodynamics… the turbulence created by them seems to negate the open air passage. By decreasing weight, however, they improve aerodynamics in other aspects of flight/performance.
How long something is, generally improves it’s aerodynamic performance on the other hand… if the ring were shaped as an air foil, I think that would offer ideal performance. If you were able to make that air foil just a framework, that would decrease weight significantly further improving performance. (But increasing complexity of design a good bit I suspect)

I actually already made a structured airfoil design i can print. I’ve already printed a few sections in PLA and CF-PLA. (if i remember right it was a 2412 airfoil shape)
I planned on wrapping it with CF / epoxy to add extra rigidity and protection. and a plus side that CF mat is easier to acquire than cf strips needed for the other design. heck i can get CF/Kevlar blend mat if that’s a better option structurally. It also uses a lot less bolts to hold it together, and overall cheaper to produce. currently its being made to support my eppg design but can easily be modified to fit others.

At the moment im low on funds so the projects are on hold. The one above was really out of curiosity and bit of inspiration from E-pusher’s sketch and Patricioruiz’s test. I get bored and start new projects all the time.

would you rather see the airfoil design made? or both?

That’s awesome… Personally, I’m really looking forward to seeing the airfoil design, though anything you (or others) think might be better is interesting to me as well. It just seems that will perform with the least turbulence/resistance, and could stay plenty strong at the same time. Seems to me like the blunt leading edge would help resolve much of the concerns regarding the CF cutting the lines as well… though I’m sure this section would want a nice sanding regardless.
I haven’t worked with CF yet… last time I looked in to it it was far too expensive for me… but it’s awesome to see people putting out such functional and epic designs!
